San Francisco 2008

The 2008 seminar came at a time when the world was changing direction. It was the year when platform economics, customer experience, and digital interaction began to take shape—long before we understood what it would mean. For me, it was an encounter with a new reality: how technology, people, organization, and culture are merging into an ecosystem of innovation.

San Francisco 2008 wasn't just about subjects.
It was about seeing the contours of the future – before it came.

Day 1

Icon illustration of a stylized stack of books in dark blue on a light background. The symbol represents professional knowledge, literature, learning and reflection from the seminars in San Francisco and Silicon Valley. The illustration is used as a visual element to highlight the main professional themes, insights and experiences related to innovation, digitalization, entrepreneurship and technological development. The book icon also symbolizes how theory, research and practical experiences were collected and continued through the seminar series.

The first day explored why Silicon Valley became the world’s most productive innovation ecosystem. We saw how the interaction between academia, entrepreneurs, investors and culture creates momentum, learning and new ideas. This was the day when innovation gained a human and organisational foundation.

Day 2

Illustration of a light bulb used as a symbol of idea development, innovation and insight. The motif represents how data, services and customer insight became increasingly important drivers of the digital economy – where technology was not only about systems, but about understanding people, needs and value creation.

Day 2 took us into Google’s world – where the platform economy, data and experimentation form the foundation for growth. It became clear how small ideas can develop into global services when culture, technology and structure all move in the same direction.

Day 3

Minimalist illustration of a globe used as a symbol of international collaboration, globalisation, knowledge sharing and worldwide digital development. The icon represents how technology, trade, innovation and communication connect people, organisations and societies across national borders. Its timeless design makes the illustration well suited to professional topics relating to international economics, digitalisation and global markets.

Day 3 showed how the digital customer experience was evolving: from visual e-commerce to multichannel behaviour and global customer service centres.

This was the day we realised that customer experience is not a single function, but an entire value chain.

Day 4

Minimalist illustration of a shopping trolley with a shopping bag, used as a symbol of e-commerce, online shopping and the digital customer journey. The icon represents the development of modern commerce, where technology, user experience and accessibility come together to create digital shopping experiences. The illustration has a clean and timeless design suited to professional themes within digitalisation, omnichannel and innovation.

The fourth day brought together perspectives in a bigger picture: from multichannel to omnichannel, from research to commercialization, and from technology to organization. Here, innovation was put in the context of culture, strategy, and society.

Cross-disciplinary topics

Minimalist illustration of a computer screen used as a symbol of digitalisation, websites, technology and digital user experiences. The icon represents how information, services and communication increasingly take place through digital interfaces and screens. The simple and timeless design makes the illustration suitable for professional themes within web development, e-commerce, innovation and digital transformation.

This section ties the entire seminar together. It deals with ecosystems, platform logic, customer experience, global organization and Scandinavian innovation culture – professional threads that run across all the days and show the entirety of the 2008 program.

Summary

Icon illustration of a smartphone in dark blue on a light background. The symbol represents mobile technology, digital services and the transition to a mobile-first world. In the seminars from San Francisco and Oxford, the smartphone illustrates how digitalization has moved services, communication and customer experiences to mobile platforms and made technology an integral part of everyday life. The icon also symbolizes innovation, accessibility, user experience and the development of modern digital ecosystems.

The summary brings together the insights from the entire week: that innovation happens in interaction, that customer experience is value creation, and that data, people and organization must function as one system. It was in 2008 that we first saw the contours of the future as it looks today.
