Part 20 - Ai-Buddy.. what exactly is a meta title and a meta description?

Most people who visit a website never pay attention to the meta title or meta description. Yet they are among the most important pieces of text on a website. They help search engines, browsers, and artificial intelligence understand what the page is about – and they can be crucial in determining whether someone chooses to visit the page. In this article, we take a closer look at what they are, why they exist, and how they should be used.

Magne & the Friend
Magne
Friend...
Now you have mentioned meta title and meta description several times.
I have to admit I know the words.
I have been working on this for many years.
But if I put myself in the reader's shoes...
What exactly is a meta title?

The buddy
Let's start with something simple.
Imagine you are writing a book.
The title of the book is on the front page.
It tells the reader what the book is about.
A meta title does much the same thing.
It is the most important headline a website has when presenting itself to search engines, browsers and, in many cases, artificial intelligence.

Magne
So...
Is the meta title the same as the headline I see at the top of the page?
The buddy
Not necessarily.
Sometimes they are the same.
Other times they are different.
The headline is primarily written for the people reading the page.
The meta title is written to clearly describe the page when it is displayed outside the website itself, such as in search results or in the browser tab.
Ideally, the two should support each other and tell the same story.
Magne
And the meta description?
The buddy
You can think of it as a short presentation.
It's not supposed to tell everything.
It should give the reader a good understanding of what the page is about and why it might be useful.
A good meta description is therefore not advertising.
It is an honest and precise summary of the content.
Magne
So...
When we spend a lot of time on meta titles and meta descriptions on The Invisible Capital...
Is it really because we want to be clear?

The buddy
Yes.
Clear.
Precise.
Credible.
A good meta title and meta description help both people and technology understand the content before they open the page.
That's the first impression – in text form.
Academic specialization
Here we explain:
What a meta title is.
What a meta description is.
Where they are used.
Why they should describe the content honestly.
Why they shouldn't "promise" more than the article actually delivers.
Here we can use a concrete example from The Invisible Capital (I think that will be a great strength), where we show how you have worked on writing meta titles that are both clear and build expectations.
The difference between a headline and a meta title
Element | Main task |
Heading | Tells the reader what the article is about when the page is opened. |
Meta title | Presents the page to search engines, browsers, and often in search results. |
Meta title | Presents the page to search engines, browsers, and often in search results. |
Intro | Gives the reader a brief introduction to the content. |
Meta description | Summarizes the content before the reader visits the page. |

We have only just begun.
Magne
Friend...
Now I understand what a meta title and a meta description are.
But how do search engines and artificial intelligence actually find
access to all pages on a website?
The buddy
Hehe...
Now we are ready for the next chapter.
We should not just look at one side.
We're going to look at the entire website.
How the pages fit together.
How they are discovered.
And why structure is key to being understood.
Academic background and further reading
This series also builds on my own professional journey through the Web Design study , the eMarketing study , Innovation and Commercialization and professional seminars in San Francisco and Oxford .
