Part 8 - AI Buddy... what exactly is AI optimization?

You may have heard terms like “AI Optimization,” “LLMO,” “GEO,” or “Answer Engine Optimization.” New terms are popping up almost every week. But is this really about tricking artificial intelligence? Or is it about something far more fundamental? In this article, we take a closer look at what AI Optimization actually means—and why the best strategy may be the simplest.

Magne & the Friend
Magne
Friend...
Finally.
Now I have to ask.
We have spent many articles talking about artificial intelligence.
About language.
About trust.
About websites.
About content.
But we have almost avoided one word.
AI optimization.
Why?

The buddy
Because I wanted you to first understand why.
If we had started with the term, many would have thought this was about technical tricks.
It doesn't.
Magne
So...
What is it really?
The buddy
For me, AI optimization is about one thing.
Making your knowledge easier to understand.
Not just for artificial intelligence.
But also for people.
If people understand the content better...
It often also becomes easier for artificial intelligence to understand it.

Magne
So...
This isn't really about writing for artificial intelligence, is it?
The buddy
No.
It's about writing so well that both humans and artificial intelligence benefit from the content.
There is an important difference.
Magne
But why are so many people talking about this right now?
The buddy
Because the way people find information is changing.
In the past, most people went to a search engine.
Now more and more people are also using artificial intelligence to get answers.
That means websites need to be clear.
Not because the algorithms require it.
But because people still want good answers.
Magne
So...
What exactly is the difference between SEO and AI optimization?
The buddy
That question almost deserves an article of its own.
But if I were to put it simply:
SEO has traditionally been about making content easier to find.
AI optimization is more about making content easier to understand, explain, and use when artificial intelligence helps humans find answers.
The two areas do not compete.
They complement each other.

Magne
So...
If I've already written good content...
Have I perhaps come further than I think?
The buddy
Yes.
Many are now discovering that good content, clear structure and high professional quality are the best investment they can make.
Not just for today's search engines.
But also for tomorrow's artificial intelligence.
Academic specialization
Here we introduce the concepts, but explain that they are still under development.
We emphasize that the industry does not yet have a single common standard, and that several terms are used for related ideas.
Terms you may encounter
AI optimization
AI Optimization (AIO)
LLMO (Large Language Model Optimization)
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)
AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)
We explain that these terms overlap, but are used slightly differently by different professional communities and companies. Therefore, it is more important to understand the principles than to get hung up on the abbreviations.
SEO and AI optimization – side by side
SEO | AI optimization |
Helps people find content through search. | Helps artificial intelligence understand and convey content. |
Focuses on visibility in search results. | Focuses on understanding, coherence and quality. |
Builds traffic to the website. | Builds knowledge that can be used in responses and dialogue. |
Important for search engines. | Important for language models and other AI services |
It's about being found. | It's about being understood. |
Note:
In practice, these areas overlap to a large extent. Good SEO and good AI optimization are often based on the same basic principles: quality, structure, clear language, and useful content.

Magne
Friend...
If AI optimization is really about being understood...
Where do I start?
The buddy
Hehe...
There begins the most practical part of the entire series.
For now we are going to move from theory to action.
We will build a website step by step – so that both humans and artificial intelligence can more easily understand it.
Academic background and further reading
This series also builds on my own professional journey through the Web Design study , the eMarketing study , Innovation and Commercialization and professional seminars in San Francisco and Oxford . Here you will find the background, professional environments and experiences that have followed the development from the early years of the web to today's digitalization.
